TRAINING: Right now, I am least confident in my putt (inside the 10m circle) so I practice putting between 3 and 5 times per week for about half an hour and try and make 10 putts in a row from 20-25 feet.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A TOURNAMENT?
I think its really important to be ready for everything a tournament can throw at you, whether that is
a type of course or shot that you aren't used to or bad weather. I try and make sure my mind is at ease by making sure I have everything I could possibly need at a tournament: backups of my favorite discs,
rain gear, extra shoes, socks, and towels. To prepare mentally the day of tournaments, I go out and throw drives on 5-10 holes at the tournament course, and then I putt for 15-30 minutes so that I feel
confident when the 2 minute warning sounds.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE TOURNAMENTS?
1. Any DD Event (but especially the Glass Blown Open)
2. The Memorial Championship
3. USDGC
4. Mad City Open
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 FAVORITE COURSES?
1. McNaughton Park - Peoria, IL
2. Brown Deer Park - Milwaukee, WI
3. Winthrop Gold - Rock Hill, SC
PET PEEVES: Players that take this game so seriously that they won't
speak to their group during competitive rounds. I understand there is a time and place to focus as hard as possible and just concentrate on your next shot but for me, this game is about comraderie and I
personally play better and have a better time when I am playing with a group that I enjoy.
PERSONAL DISC GOLF GOALS: To develop my mental game so that mistakes
on the course don't affect my confidence. Confidence is built over time and 1 bad shot or round should not be enough to break that confidence.
ROLE MODELS/INFLUENCES:
Juliana Korver was my favorite Pro when I was learning how to play. Since I began playing professional tournaments, I have come to admire Eric McCabe and Paul McBeth, two really great
players, both on and off the course.
ADVICE: During competitive rounds, play within your own ability. I
have played my fair share of tournament rounds with players rated 30-50 points higher than me and I used to find myself trying to throw the shots that they were throwing. If you try to throw shots that are
beyond your skill level, you are more likely to get into trouble and card a bogie than throw that perfect drive and get the spectacular birdie. We all love to park those ridiculous shots that end up
working out 1 out of 10 times but competitive rounds are not the time for being a hero. If you play within your own ability and take risks only when you are truly confident that they will pay off, you will have a much more successful and enjoyable tournament.
