Distance Drivers

Enforcer

Three molds comprise Gavin’s distance driver lineup. His main driver for controlled shots with an overstable finish is the Enforcer. He carries at least two of his Team Series Enforcers in the Fuzion Orbit plastic. He was throwing them at every opportunity. He described them as providing “a lot more of a straight push and even holding to the right a little bit.”

Rive

Alongside his Enforcers, his other go-to driver is the Rive in the Royal Grand Orbit plastic. He likes these for the distance they provide with less overstability than the Enforcers. To demonstrate, he threw them both on a similar line on hole nine. On the green, the Rive was around 20-30 feet to the right because of the reduced fade.

Raider

His final distance driver is the Dynamic Discs Raider in both Fuzion and Lucid plastic. He said he likes using these for distance forehands or rollers. Gavin favored the less stable Raider for his forehands because he can get more distance with them when thrown with less power.

Midranges

Gavin chose hole eight at Vista Del Camino to demonstrate his midranges for us. For those unfamiliar, hole eight is a three-hundred-foot water carry, and while we were filming, it had about a five-mile-an-hour headwind. Safe to say Gavin was feeling confident with his midrange lineup.

Verdict

Gavin’s workhorse midrange appears to be the Dynamic Discs Verdict which he carries in two plastics, Hybrid-X and Fuzion Burst. He chose the Hybrid-X to show its flight and threw it on a slight anhyzer with good power to account for the wind. The Verdict held the angle out of his hand without any risk of turning over. While the headwind minimized the fade, the Verdict had started to work towards a hyzer angle by the time it landed flat.

Truth

He also carries a Dynamic Discs Truth in the Fuzion Orbit plastic as an Idlewild Open fundraiser. He threw it on a slight hyzer, and it flipped to flat and gently turned over, painting a beautiful curve to the right over the water. The disc hit the ground about fifty feet past the basket and slid even farther than that, pushing four hundred feet in total distance! He described the Truth as an “extra club” because of that distance. It almost fits between his midranges and fairway drivers.

Claymore

Since recording, we have seen Gavin throwing a Latitude 64 Frost line Claymore a few times for understable shots, mostly in the woods. The Claymore flies a similar line to the Truth, but with less distance and more control.

Fairway Drivers

Felon

When we arrived at the drop zone for hole nine, we saw a perfect opportunity for gavin to talk about his fairway drivers. He started with his favorite disc, the Dynamic Discs Felon. The first that he talked about were his two Fuzion Orbit Felons. He described them as “straight-ish flying” and threw one on a slight hyzer. It flipped to flat, and carried around three-hundred and fifty feet before fading and skipping to the pin. The other Felons that Gavin carries are his signature Hybrid-X Felons that were last year’s team series disc. These are much flatter and have a much more overstable flight. To get the same result, he had to throw his Hybrid-X Felon on an anhyzer to get it to carry straight before finishing to the left.

Explorer

The next fairway driver from Gavin’s bag is the Latitude 64 Opto-X Explorer. He said that he uses those for a similar shot to the Fuzion Orbit Felon, but the Explorer will hold an anhyzer angle a little bit longer if he needs it and it won’t fade as strongly.

Evader

Gavin’s staple fairway driver, for any time he’s playing in the woods, is the Dynamic Discs Evader. He carries two in the Lucid plastic. Gavin described the Evader as a “do-whatever-you-want-it-to-do disc” because it’s useful for hyzerflips, turnovers, or even shots that stay on hyzer and push forward their whole flight. Of course, he then threw a perfect hyzerflip and parked the basket.

Vandal

Gavin’s favorite roller disc is the Dynamic Discs Vandal in the Fuzion-X plastic. He uses the Vandal because it’s useful for different types of rollers. He described throwing it on a cut roller that rolls super straight before finishing to the right, or a traditional distance roller that carves back and forth across the fairway. Hole 10 at Vista is traditionally a roller hole, but it can be a challenge because the fairway slopes to the left for the entire hole. The added difficulty was not even a second thought for Gavin as he laid down the picture-perfect roller that gave him the perfect opportunity to demonstrate his approach discs!

Putters/Approach Discs

Harp

Gavin first talked about favoring forehand approaches because he can look at the basket and keep his point of reference while throwing. Because of that, he tends to favor more overstable approach discs. Even for his right-to-left approaches, he uses a Westside Discs harp in the BT Hard plastic because it’s beat in to a point that it will hold an anhyzer angle when he needs it to.

Sockibomb Slammer

His go-to approach disc is the Dynamic Discs Sockibomb Slammer in the Classic Supreme plastic. He said he likes the Sockibomb Slammer because it only knows “to get to the ground, stay close to the basket, and be very overstable.” He only uses it for shots under two-hundred-and-forty feet, but inside that distance, he feels very confident. In his demonstration, he threw a flat shot that was a little high, but the Slammer faded strongly and ended up inside the circle for a putt.

Culprit

A new addition to Gavin’s bag was the Dynamic Discs Culprit! He likes the Culprit for longer approaches that still need that consistent and overstable flight. He threw the Culprit on a similar line to the Sockibomb Slammer. It held straight longer, and had more of a sweep to its fade rather than the drop that the Sockibomb Slammer had.

Supreme Judge

And finally, for putting, Gavin uses the Dynamic Discs Supreme Judge. He talked about how he likes a beaded putter because of how often he plays in the wind on tour. In the past he’s putted with a beadless putter, but he switched to the Classic Judge, and then the Supreme Judge this year.

Summary

From our time with Gavin, we could tell he was really excited about this seaon. He’s excited about his discs and getting out on tour to show what he can do. And we’re excited too!
