Fairway Drivers

Escape

We started on hole 12, an uphill 300-foot par three. This hole was the perfect place for Kona to show us her fairway driver lineup. She began with her two Dynamic Discs Escapes, one Fuzion Orbit Escape, and one Supreme Escape. She threw the Supreme Escape first and described it as “a longer Maverick” because of how straight it flies. It flipped to flat, carried over the water, and nestled in at most two feet from the pin.

The other Escape she carries is her Fuzion Orbit Escape. This disc has a beautiful stamp and a beautiful design from Lore dyed on it. This Escape has been in her bag a little longer, but even out of the box, she described it as slightly more understable than her Supreme Escape.

Getaway

We looped around to the drop zone on hole 9 to see the rest of her fairway lineup. The first disc she pulled out was her Dynamic Discs Getaway in the Fuzion Orbit plastic. She said she likes to use the Getaway for shots she can throw with a flat release and count on the reliable fade at the end. She also mentioned that she trusts the Getaway more than the Escape in windy conditions.

Evader

She chooses the Dynamic Discs Evader in Fuzion Burst plastic for slightly less distance. She said the Evader flies a similar distance to her Maverick but with a more torque resistant flight. She threw it on a little bit of hyzer, it flipped to flat, and never considered working to the right at all before fading gently right at 300 feet.

Maverick

Kona threw her Dynamic Discs Maverick in Lucid plastic next to give a comparison. When thrown on a nearly identical angle as the Evader, the Maverick flipped to flat and gently floated to the right before a slight fade brought it back into almost a straight line from where she released it. While it may not get as much use on more open courses, the Maverick is really useful for Kona’s game in the woods.

Felon

The final fairway driver in Kona’s bag is the Dynamic Discs Felon in the Fuzion plastic with the Raptor Eye pattern supporting Ricky Wysocki. She mainly uses her Felon for forehands and longer upshots because of the clean release and consistent, overstable flight.

Distance Drivers

Trespass

When we got to Hole 10’s fairway we had the perfect opportunity for Kona to demonstrate her Distance Drivers! Her go-to is the Dynamic Discs Trespass. She has one in the Fuzion Triple Burst plastic that she refers to as her “flip-sauce baby”. She can control this disc to flip to flat or flex to the right for more distance. She also carries her tour series Lucid-X Moonshine Trespass. This Trespass has a little bit more stability but still gets excellent glide and distance.

Defender

For more overstable shots, she relies on her Dynamic Discs Defender in Lucid plastic. She specifically pointed out the Defender’s utility in windy situations or when she needs a skip shot. It’s not the farthest flying disc in her bag, but it does have a lot of utility for her game.

Grace

She fills the understable slot in her distance driver lineup with the Latitude 64° Royal Grand Grace. It was a little windy so Kona elected to demonstrate her Grace with a forehand throw. She threw it on a slight hyzer and it flipped to flat, carried super straight and had the most gentle fade to land right under the basket.

Midranges

Evidence

We stopped about 250 feet away from the basket on hole 11 for Kona to show us her midrange lineup. The disc she was most excited about was her signature Dynamic Discs Fuzion Evidence. She shared the story of then president of the company, Doug Bjerkaas giving her one to test but then never getting it back because she liked it so much! However, Doug won’t be missing it long because the Fuzion Burst Evidence will be Kona’s tour series disc this year.

For Kona, the Evidence will turn out of her hand and carry super straight but still have a reliable fade at the end. It’s useful for straight shots in the woods, and it’s useful for turnovers because it has that little fade at the end to keep it from cut-rolling when it hits the ground. The Evidence shot that fits hole 11 is a hyzer release that flips up, but never gets all the way to flat, pushing that hyzer angle with a lot of control. So much that Kona almost threw it in the basket from 250 feet!

Verdict

For her overstable midrange slot Kona reaches for her Dynamic Discs Verdict in the Lucid plastic. The Verdict is a reliable midrange that she trusts in the wind for that extra fade when her Evidence might stand up a little too much.

Putters/Approach Discs

Emac Judge

Kona’s approach disc lineup is extensive. Likely because on tour, the FPO field plays a lot of par 4s with tight greens that rely on an accurate approach game. Her go-to for straight backhand approach shots is the Dynamic Discs Emac Judge in the Lucid Moonshine Plastic that she received from Eric McCabe himself! She describes it as perfect for her backhand straight shots because it won’t turn over and it will fade to the left just at the end of its flight.

Deputy

For more understable approach shots, she relies on her Dynamic Discs Deputy in the Prime plastic. She threw it on a hyzer-flip shot and it flew dead straight for 145 feet. She describes her Deputy as being useful in the woods as well because the shot shapes can require more creativity.

Sockibomb Slammer

For her forehand approaches, a new addition to her bag is the Dynamic Discs Sockibomb Slammer. She describes the slammer saying “It doesn’t fly, it doesn’t have a ton of glide, and when it hits; it sits.” And then throws it on a smooth forehand hyzer from around 150’ to within 10 feet of the pin.

Harp

Moving back 40 or 50 feet, Kona showed off her Westside Discs Harp in the Tournament plastic next. This Harp has a beautiful Warrior Sun DyeMax design on it as well. She says she prefers the harp from outside of 150 feet because “it can handle the torque and it has the glide to get there.”

Justice

When the wind picks up, or there may be hazards on the left, she switches to the Dynamic Discs Justice in the Lucid Chameleon plastic. This Justice has the very first stamp she ever did with Dynamic Discs on it as well! A cool throwback in her bag that has a lot of utility when the stakes are highest.

Deputy

Kona also made the change to a new putting putter this year. While previously she had been using an Emac Judge, this year she will be putting with the Dynamic Discs Deputy in the Classic plastic. She swapped after her husband, Colton, suggested she might find more success with a putter that has more glide. And so far, she has. Her deputies have the “nice monster” stamp on them which is allegedly the monster that redirects discs after a card mate says “nice”!

Summary

Mission Rig Bag

The last thing that Kona switched up this year was actually her bag! She’s still carrying the HandEye Mission Rig bag, but this year she’s carrying one with her signature Topography design. Her bag is colorfully decorated with an assortment of keychains and pins from her fans and community.
