Spectator Guide for the 2023 Dynamic Discs Open

The Dynamic Discs Open, an Elite Event of the Disc Golf Pro Tour, will draw the most talented disc golfers on Earth to vie for both victory and crucial tour points as the playoffs draw ever closer. If you've never seen someone launch a disc a distance that would cover almost two football fields or hit a make-or-break 50-foot putt in front of a rapt crowd ready to erupt, you haven't truly experienced disc golf at its finest.

And be assured watching on a screen doesn't hold a candle to being there in person. When you see the pros live, you don't need to be a disc golf aficionado to know you're witnessing something special.

When the pros aren't putting on a show, visitors will also have a chance to get in rounds at Emporia's numerous and excellent disc golf courses, check out huge selections of discs and other gear, and enjoy a wide range of other festivities – including our famous Block Party.

Where & When Is the Dynamic Discs Open?

All three rounds of the 2023 Dynamic Discs Open are at the Emporia Country Club in Emporia, Kansas, from Friday, June 16, to Sunday, June 18.

The Open Women/FPO division will begin play first in the morning and the Open/MPO division will follow. Specific tee times are pending so stay tuned. Feature cards (Friday) and leading cards (Saturday and Sunday) will tee off a few hours after their division's first tee time, but you'll want to arrive well before that to secure the best vantage point.

Do I Need Tickets to Spectate the Dynamic Discs Open?

You must buy a ticket to watch the Dynamic Discs Open in person. Children 10 and under are free when accompanied by an adult with a ticket.

Three-day and individual-day tickets are available. You can see ticket prices and descriptions on the Dynamic Discs Open website, and you can purchase tickets on the Dynamic Discs Open Eventbrite page.

You will pick up a physical spectator pass upon arrival at the event and need to be present to pick up your pass. Keep the pass visible while spectating and in a secure place. Lost passes will not be replaced.

Where Can I Park for the Dynamic Discs Open?

There is no spectator parking at the Emporia Country Club (ECC). Spectators can park on city streets, at Hammond Park (a five-minute walk from ECC), and in specified lots at Emporia State University (a seven-minute walk from ECC).

The earlier you arrive, the better your chances of easily finding parking. If you are coming with a group, carpooling is a great option to save you many logistical headaches.

What's the Earliest I Can Come to the Dynamic Discs Open?

7:30 a.m. is the earliest spectators can arrive at the course each day of the tournament.

Where Are the Best Places to Spectate?

Dynamic Discs Open spectators have lots of viewing areas to choose from. One of the best is near island hole 16, where you have views of holes 17 and 18. This will put you near some of the most dramatic and consequential parts of all players' rounds.

There are also bleachers behind hole 18 that provide full views of holes 14-16 and 18, plus a partial view of hole 17.

Those who want to see the pros' raw power can post on hole 1. This par 5 is over 1,000 feet, and many pros are going nearly 100% from the tee to bite off as much distance on their drives as possible.

To get prime positions at any of these locations, we suggest you show up well before lead or feature cards tee off to claim a spot. You can also move through different spectating areas to follow cards, but you may not get the best views as choice vantage points will be taken by early birds.

There will be signs and staff directing you to spectator areas. Make sure to follow all instructions.

What & When Is the Dynamic Discs Open Block Party?

The Dynamic Discs Open Block Party is an outdoor event the city of Emporia looks forward to every year, whether they're disc golf fans or not. In 2023, the Block Party is from 5 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, on Commercial Street's 800 and 900 blocks.

Along with a Vendor Village where you can browse disc golf gear and plenty more, the Block Party includes a food truck festival, activities for kids, and beer. Expect a lively atmosphere…and maybe a few of your favorite pros letting their hair down.

Where Should I Play Disc Golf Disc Golf While I'm There?

When you're not spectating or Block Partying, try out some courses that help make Emporia one of the world's few true disc golf paradises.

Jones Park is just a four-minute drive (or a 25-minute walk) from Emporia Country Club, home to two top-notch courses: Jones East and Jones West. Jones has helped host many of Emporia's biggest disc golf events in the past, including the 2022 and 2016 Pro Disc Golf World Championships.

Another local favorite is Peter Pan Park, which has a variety of tee positions that will appeal to players with a wide range of skill levels.

A glow round will also be at the nine-hole Hammond Park on Saturday, June 16.

What Are the Best Restaurants and Bars?

There are more great places to get a bite than just the Saturday food truck festival at the Block Party. Here are some top options if you're looking for food on other nights.

Pizza, sandwiches, craft beer: Try out Radius Brewing for some of the best food in town and the unquestionably freshest beer. Union Street Social, known for their great food, excellent cocktails, and superb hospitality, is another local restaurant that’s worth a visit.
Mexican: Casa Ramos is a great option for a sit-down Mexican dinner (and maybe a margarita). El Marmol will hit the spot for a quick, authentic Mexican bite.
American grill: Great burgers, cheesesteaks, po'boys, and other grill favorites can be found at Do-B's and J's Carry Out. Feeling BBQ? - Try BobbyD's Merchant St BBQ.

Those looking for a place to hang out later in the night with drinks, games, music, and plenty more should know the Dynamic Discs Open is taking over Bourbon Cowboy, a bar and dance hall in Emporia, each evening from June 13 to Saturday, June 17. There's a free mini disc golf course, karaoke on Friday, June 16, and live music after the Block Party at the Bourbon Cowboy.

What Are Some Other Things to Do Around Emporia?

If watching the world's best disc golfers compete at a world-class venue, playing great disc golf courses, and taking in all the festivities still leaves you wanting more…don't worry. There's more!

For one, Emporia is near one of the few remaining prairie ecosystems in the United States. You can visit this rare and wonder-filled landscape of waving grasses at the nearby Tallgrass Prairie National Reserve.

If you have little ones with you, there's the completely free David Traylor Zoo of Emporia and a chance to cool off at Jones Aquatic Center.

Those who feel their spirits are lacking (wink, wink) can visit Trolley House Distillery, one of a few Kansas distilleries.

What Should I Bring When I Spectate?

Here are the things we recommend you bring with you when spectating the Dynamic Discs Open:

A water bottle (water stations for refills are available)
A camping chair or other small, portable sitting surface
Small snacks like chips, nuts, fruit, etc.
Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
Check the weather. In the event of rain, you'll need rain gear.

Please note: no large bags or containers are allowed on the course, so plan and pack accordingly.

How Can I Meet the Pros?

There will be official autograph signings where you can meet and talk with the pros after their rounds. Some may attend events like the Block Party or an evening at the Bourbon Cowboy.

Please know, however, that while at Emporia Country Club or in the parking areas, it is not permitted to approach players unless they initiate an interaction before, during, and after rounds. Competing at the highest level takes a lot of mental energy, and we must respect these professionals' space as they prepare for, play, and process their rounds.

What Etiquette Should I Know?

For the most part, etiquette when spectating pro disc golf is common sense: Any activity that distracts or interferes with a competitor’s round or pace of play (especially when they're throwing) must be avoided.

Still, first-time spectators should keep these basics in mind:

Players love when their success is appreciated. Applaud and cheer following great throws and putts.
If you are in a player’s sightline while they are preparing to throw or putt, stay motionless until they've thrown (unless they ask you to move). Moving out of a player's view is usually more distracting than staying still.
Be aware of the action around you and be silent if a player within earshot is preparing to throw or putt.
Never leave designated spectator zones or ignore the directions of event staff.
No flash photography
Disc golf is a sport for families, and children are very welcome. Still, kiddos of all ages need to abide by the same rules as their parents/caretakers.
