As a beginner, my best advice is to find the local course pro and ask questions. I know what it's like to start playing with a few friends and get caught in that circle and stop learning new stuff. If you want to get better, play with people that are better than you. It might suck to get beat a lot at first, but eventually you'll be competing with them.
