Can This App Help You Throw Farther in Disc Golf? Meet Throw Lab

Every disc golfer wants to improve. Whether you're trying to throw farther, hit more consistent lines, or simply understand why one throw flies perfectly while the next one doesn't, figuring out what you're doing differently can be a challenge.

What if your phone could help?

On a recent episode of the Disc Golf Answer Man, Bobby sat down with Josh Kedzuch, creator of ThrowLab, an iPhone app designed to help disc golfers analyze their throws without purchasing expensive equipment.

Turning Frustration Into an App

Josh has been playing disc golf recreationally. Like many players, he noticed that trying to throw harder didn't always produce better results. Sometimes his release angles would change, and his throws would become less consistent.

Watching professional players and studying their form wasn't necessarily giving him the answers he needed.

With a background in analytics and technology, Josh decided to build something that could help him understand what was happening during his own throws.

That idea eventually became Throw Lab.

What Does Throw Lab Measure?

Using slow-motion video recorded on an iPhone, Throw Lab analyzes three key measurements:

  • Throw Speed: How fast the disc is traveling in miles per hour.

  • Disc Angle: The tilt of the disc during its initial flight.

  • Release Path: Whether the disc is traveling upward, downward, or level.

The app also includes a distance measurement feature that allows players to track how far they're throwing each disc.

One of the biggest advantages is that Throw Lab doesn't require additional hardware. The video analysis happens directly on your phone, and you can track results for different discs in your bag.

Understanding Your Throw Over Time

What makes Throw Lab interesting isn't necessarily seeing how fast you throw once. It's being able to compare your results over multiple throws and practice sessions.

For example, Josh discovered that when he tried to throw harder, his release angles often changed, resulting in less consistent throws.

He also found that he could sometimes throw a slower-speed driver farther than a faster one.

These are lessons many disc golfers have heard before, but having measurements from your own throws can help you better understand what's happening.

Is Throw Lab Worth Trying?

Throw Lab isn't designed to replace a coach or tell you exactly how to fix your form. Instead, it provides information that players and coaches can use to evaluate changes and track progress.

At the time of the interview, Throw Lab was available for iPhone, with five free flight analyses and five free distance measurements. Additional use requires a subscription.

If you enjoy practicing, testing different discs, or digging into the numbers behind your game, Throw Lab might be worth exploring.
